Gastric Ulcers

Gastric Ulcers

Gastric ulcer syndrome is one of leading causes of poor performance in equines. This condition often overlooked by owners but can be quite easily diagnosed and successfully treated.

The main symptoms of gastric ulcers are:

  • Poor condition/ weight loss
  • Poor performance/ reluctance to train
  • Resistance to girthing
  • Reduced appetite
  • Attitude changes
  • Changes in coat quality
  • Repeated, low grade colic episodes

If your horse is showing any of the above signs, it will definitely be worth discussing gastroscopy with one of our vets.

If gastric ulcers are found during the gastroscopy, the vet will discuss the treatment options with you. Your horse will need to be re-scoped after the treatment course has finished to ensure the ulcers have healed. Some horses will be prone to gastric ulcers, often for varying reasons. It is always advised that your horse starts on a gastric supplement once clear of ulcers to prevent them from reoccurring. The vet will recommend the best supplement for your horse.

Gastroscopy is available at anytime and is fully mobile so the vet can comfortably perform this at your horse’s yard. We do run a gastrocope clinic at our Woodnook equine unit every 4 weeks at a discounted price. Please keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for the dates for the aupcoming gastroscope clinics.
